1. Does the Maine Climate Table advocate for state or federal policy?
The Maine Climate Table does not lobby or advocte for any policy or legislation. Many other organizations serve this function. OUR function is to grow the level of participation in dealing with climate change, and bring people up to speed on what is understood about climate change. We believe our members can decide for themselves whether they want to support (or oppose) any particular policy. Still, the Maine Climate Table views climate change as a serious issue that threatens everyone’s long-term well being. We need a bigger force, not a divided force.
2. What is the difference between the Maine Climate Table and the Maine Climate Council?
The Maine Climate Council (link) was formed by legislative mandate in 2019. The goal of the state-led Maine Climate Council is to propose climate policy that will help the state meet is 2030, 2045, and 2050 climate goals.
The Maine Climate Table was formed in 2013, and is a consortium of organizations, businesses, and individuals working to grow the level of participation in climate change in Maine. The Maine Climate Table seeks to make sure diverse voices of all political, cultural, and economic situations, have a voice.
3. Who can be a member of the Maine Climate Table?
Anybody can be a member of the Maine Climate Table. The more diverse our membership, the more the Maine Climate Table can build participation in dealing with climate change. Even climate skeptics are welcome. We understand that climate change can be complex and confusing.
5. Does it cost to be a member of the Maine Climate Table?
No. But the functions of the Maine Climate Table do cost money. We welcome any financial support our members can offer. We also welcome in-kind support to advance our mission of growing participation. Just go to the “Join Page” to become a member.
6. Can I help?
Yes. First, tell people about the Maine Climate Table and direct them to our web site for information. Second, find a group (formal or informal) that would like to host one of our Climate Communications workshops. We could all benefit from being better able to have productive conversations with people about climate change. Remember, we need everyone, regardless of political persuasion. 7. How is the Maine Climate Table funded?
The Maine Climate Table is funded by private foundations, businesses, and nonprofit organizations. The Steering Committee is a voluntary. The Chair is a part-time paid position.
